Tar Isteach was launched in September 1999 to provide services for republican ex-prisoners and their families in the North Belfast area.

 Aims and Objectives

Working for the social, economic and emotional well-being of republican ex-prisoners, displaced persons and former activists and their families.

The aims and objectives of Tar Isteach are to attain equality, inclusion, full citizenship and emotional well-being for Republican Ex-Prisoners and their families in North Belfast through the provision of Advice, Counselling, Emotional support, Youth Provision, Training & Education.  However, the group is totally inclusive and is part of community development network of North Belfast working to improve social and economic conditions.

The project offers welfare rights/benefits advice service, counselling and emotional support, youth development programmes, training programmes, and it lobbies on behalf of ex-prisoners and their families and researches issues affecting them.

 Its staff and activities are supported by volunteers.  Much of its activities are on a cross community basis.  The project is a charity and a Company Ltd by Guarantee.  It is a community based organisation that adopts a holistic approach to providing support services to a highly marginalized group in one of the most economically deprived areas of Northern Ireland. This area bore some of the heaviest casualties of the conflict.

 It is a member of Coiste, the Greater New Lodge Community Empowerment Partnership and the cross community North Belfast Advice Partnership.   It an integral element in the network of community groups and statutory agencies that provides support and services for North Belfast.  The management committee and staff work in partnership with these statutory agencies and community groups to provide resources and facilities to advance the process of social and economic inclusion for all.

Tar Isteach will continue to lobby and campaign on behalf ex-prisoners and and persist in our attempts to remove the social and economic barriers that discriminate against them.

 The need for projects like ours is not only seen in the demand for our services but in the unresolved issues that continue to affect republican ex-prisoners and their families and for which we are continuosly campaigning and lobbying;

Ø  Discrimination in employment and provision of services
Ø  Obstacles to obtaining insurance
Ø  Obstacles in obtaining mortgages
Ø  Barriers to adoption
Ø  Travel restrictions
Ø  Pension deficits
Ø  The issue of expunging ‘criminal’ records

We also have a number of ongoing operational aims for the project;

Ø  Maintain services and standards
Ø  Modernise and innovate when possible
Ø  Reach those hard to reach ex-prisoners that are isolated or disconnected
Ø  Maintain and update the republican ex-prisoner database in order to keep the ex-prisoner community informed of developments and issues that affect them
Ø  Continuously review and enhance our governance and its effectiveness
